Surf the Waves

Surfing the waves is a metaphor that I’ve heard from different sources for different reasons over the last couple of years. I received a newsletter this week that compared waves to the ups and downs of our lives.

As I read this I kept getting visions of the surfers we watched this summer while on vacation. It was a scary weather kind of day but also beautiful so we headed to the beach anyway. The surfers were out, hanging in a small group and then one would paddle out, get up and ride the wave or fall off.  Either way, they did it over and over again.

It was so cool to watch them not give up and leave just because they fell off or they didn’t get up. They tried again. Maybe 1 out of 5 attempts they would actually ride the wave all the way in.

The people on the beach felt their energy and wanted them to make it in and even giggled some when they fell off because it was to cool to see them give it a try.  We are all privately cheering them on. At one point a board got loose and made it to the beach before the surfer. My daughter was on her feet running to grab the board and give it back to the surfer. She wanted to help him and be included a bit in the surfing.

My question today is where in life do you surf the waves? Do you attempt to get up or stay home and hunker down because it’s a rough weather day? Are you willing to fall off and get back up?

People are there to cheer you on, the help out and want to even be included in the action.
